CHILDREN (continued)
• 90% of all homeless and runaway children are from fatherless homes. (Center for Disease Control) • 85% of all children that exhibit behavioral disorders come from fatherless homes. (Center for Disease Control) • 11,268,000 total custodial mothers (Current Populations Reports, US Bureau of the Census, Series P-20, No. 458, 1991). • 2,907,000 total custodial fathers (Current Populations Reports, US Bureau of the Census, Series P-20, No. 458, 1991). As this evidence shows, It is extremely crucial to communicate with your children. It is never too late or too soon to talk with them. Even if your teenager does not want to ‘talk,’ keep trying! A lot of teenagers will say they don’t want to talk, but they all do. They might just be embarrassed or feel akward the first few times you bring it up, but eventually your child will feel comfortable enough to talk to you if you have achieved their trust. It also lets them know that you truly care about their feelings during this difficut time, because no matter how old your child is they are still your child; and since you are the adult and parent, this is your responsibility. The most important thing you need to remember is, DO NOT TALK ABOUT THE PARENT with or around them. It only causes more psychological distress. Your child’s life is at jeopardy. If you are going through a divorce and there are children involved do your research because that is your job as a parent to love, protect, and guide.
