IT’S ALL ABOUT YOU (continued)

What do you see yourself as a woman? A mother? And so on..

Remember, you are a special person. Give yourself positive compliments for each role you take on. Your identity is what you think of yourself and what you continually think is what you will believe. This sounds easier said than done, trust me I know. Each day is an opportunity to change whatever it is that you don’t like or whatever is bringing negativity in.  Get some post-its and your favorite color sharpie. You are going to write different positive compliments to yourself on each post- it and place as many as you can all over  your home. Each time you see one read it out loud. For example, on your mirror write “I am BEAUTIFUL,” or “I have gorgous eyes and a rockin rear end.” It doesn’t hurt to make yourself laugh! Then post one on your front door so you can read it as you leave the house, “ Today is a new day and I am going to enjoy every minute of it.” This might sound korney but as time goes on it will help remarkably.

▪Now lets look at Subjectivity

What is your position in society?

How does your identity enable and limit you?

Lets use the example: A single mother

How does this identity enable you?

                                  - It gives you strength. Only a strong woman can achieve being a single mother.

                                  - You child will always remember your dedication and love.

                                  - You can date! Eventually, you will want too.

                                  - You don’t have anyone to answer to or do laundry for or cook dinner for! You                                     can do and make anything your heart desires!

                                  - Once you succeed, you can say YOU did it!

How does this identity limit you?

                                  - It does make it harder to attend every event your child participates in.

                                  - You have one income coming in.

Intersectionality: A sociological theory that seeks to examine various culturally and socially constructed identities. Basically, you will examine all your different types of identities and decide where is all the intersectionality.

When we look at all the different types of identities where is all the intersectionality?

                 - Math Metaphor: the idea of adding each of our identities.

                                  >addition: white+woman+upper class= level of privalege.

                                  > Multiplicaton: negative x negative= positive

Ex: black x woman= CEO (positive)
